Bill Mazeroski's home run ball

Entertainment, Random
Yah!

Yah!

I was reading the story about Ryan Howard’s 200th home run ball and they linked to a Time article about the fate of the top 10 home run balls in history. Most of the stories are about how some rich guy now owns them and either sent them back to the player or to the Hall of Fame. But the first one is about Bill Maseroski and it’s a little different.

Leading off in the bottom of the ninth, Pittsburgh Pirate second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a home run over the left-field wall to win the World Series against the New York Yankees. It was the first time a home run had ever ended a World Series. According to reports, Ted Szafranski, 13, caught the ball but returned it to Mazeroski after the game in exchange for two cases of beer. The ball has since been placed in the Hall of Fame.

I know that 1960 was a different time. But “The Maz” traded 2 cases of beer to a 13 year old boy and nobody thought twice about it? Those were the good old days.

The Asshole Tax

Life, Rants
No Reunion for you.

No Reunion for you.

I’m out $140 because I am an Asshole.

I am an asshole for thinking that I would like to go to my 10 year reunion.

In this age of Facebook and Myspace why did I want to go? I already know that 80% of my class has kids, that 10% are rich douchebags now, that the 2% that I still hang out with are the only ones I really want to. We had ~400 people in my graduation class, of those 85 people RSVPed and only 35 people paid. So the event got canceled. Really Really canceled, so much so that the person in charge only has $450 left, total. So by my math we probably gave TJ’s catering $1500 for an event that’s not happening.

This is the list of people who paid for this reunion. It’s the list of people who care. It’s pretty much who I thought would be on there, the “nice” people from North Stafford circa 1999. The kind of people who would go out of there way to help you. I don’t remember exactly who everyone is, but I know who I don’t see. I don’t see many cheerleaders or football players. I don’t see the “cool” kids. I don’t see the “freaks” either, they’re too smart to pay $70 per person to go to this thing. I just see people like me, people who were friends with everybody but sometimes let everyone walk over them and take advantage of them. I guess some things never change.

It’s not like I don’t appreciate Heather for doing this. Planning my wedding I’m getting an understanding of how hard is is to plan an event. But I’m so pissed about being screwed out of $140. And if you’re offended that I put you on this list and called you an Asshole, just get over it. It’s my way of dealing. I think Heather is working hard to salvage some kind of reunion, but I don’t even know if I would enjoy going to an event planned with the remaining $450. It’s only $12.87 each anyway. I’m pretty sure the only topic of conversation would be how we got screwed by the 52 people that RSVPed but didn’t pay. Instead of a reunion we get 2 free drinks at TGI Fridays and dinner with a bunch of bitter assholes.

I’ll just take my ceremonial etched glassware and sit it on my shelf as a reminder not to be such an Asshole.

Getting Art done.

Art, Projects

Or at least that’s what I call it.

Laurel was working tonight and I had some projects that I needed to get done so I put on my art boots and got to work. Once again this camera sucks, but I think it’s good enough for this.

I still need to work on a couple of these, but I really had doubts about a couple of them. The red and black one is my favorite, I was REALLY unsure about the purple and green. I couldn’t seem to get it not to look cheesy. But a little time, some chances, and I’m really getting siked about the results.

Artificial Wetlands

Artificial Wetlands

I heard that the Solar Decathlon was back in town this year, but I didn’t know the dates. I didn’t want to miss it, so at lunch today Phil and I walked over to check out what’s going on. I think it starts next week, so they’re really coming together. They look so much more complicated than in previous years. I think they’ve really brought their A-game this year. It was cool to see the funcitoning artificial wetlands and water conservation systems. I didn’t have a good camera so I had to use my cell. I’ll come back next week when it’s really going so I can get a tour of the homes and get better pictures.

Maybe I’ll bring wade for some joint Swalrus Network coverage.

And now the internet has reached it's logical end.

Entertainment, The Interweb

This may be the perfect project for the internet. At first we were all just surfing around looking for naked celebrity gif images, then modems got better and we discovered videos. Then some of us started making videos of us lip syncing to popular songs. Then someone coined this term “crowdsourcing” where you get a lot of people to do little bits of something. Now there’s this… and now we can all go home.

Wait… we’re already at home.
